OFF ICMC 2005

What's ICMC?

For those of you who don't know it, the ICMC, with a history that spans more than 30 years, is a unique gathering of specialists, coming from a wide variety of scientific, technological and artistic fields, which share interest for the interdisciplinary subject of Computer Music. The ICMC is an international conference where all the different aspects of Computer Music simultaneously converge. This year, the ICMC is hosted in Barcelona, organised by the Phonos Foundation for electroacoustic music, the Pompeu Fabra University and the ESMuC - the Higher School of Music of Catalonia.

During a whole week, from Monday 5th to Friday 9th of September, the ESMuC will host more than 400 Computer Music specialists, researchers and composers, from all around the world, and more than 200 research talks, presentations and demonstrations, plus workshops and panel discussions will be presented. Concerts will also be held daily both at ESMuC and at the Auditori with more than 100 pieces will be performed.

So What's OFF-ICMC?

Nowadays computer music is ubiquitous; more clearly than ever, computer music experimentation can no longer be considered a monopoly of the academic world. Alternative and complementary trends and approaches, giving a broader and more varied perspective on the field is what OFF-ICMC tries to present: free improvisation, laptop electronica, turntablism, noise, live coding, vj-ing, sound art, net music, interactive sonic installations...

During the ICMC week, and as an important complement to this conference, artists coming from all around Europe, Japan, Australia and America, together with local and Spanish artists, are being programmed nightly from Monday to Saturday. This is happening at the Metrnom Foundation, one of Barcelona's main venues for experimental music since the early eighties. Starting at 22:00 and lasting until passed midnight, several performances will take place every night. During daytime, the gallery will also be showing six compelling sonic installations.

To discover what the last trends may be, we propose you the following 30 exercises and studies in experimental electronica from around the globe. You will discover an amazing range of artists never before seen or heard at ICMC conferences or in Barcelona. To conclude, something important that shouldn't be missed: entrance is free!
